CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Mount Mercy hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, as they snapped Coe's nine-game winning streak Friday night at Eby Fieldhouse. The Mustangs hit 17 3-pointers in the 80-68 victory.
Mount Mercy took a 15-6 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Micha Mims, her third of the game, with 12:45 to play in the first half. Coe then used a 9-1 run over the next 3:31 to cut the lead to one. Back-to-back baskets in the paint by Caitlin Kray (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and Mackenzie Reed (Iowa City, Iowa/West) cut the Mustang led to 23-21 with 7:11 left in the first half. Mount Mercy closed the opening frame on an 18-6 run before freshman Megan Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hit a free throw with :22 to play.
Coe was able to get the lead down to six with 13:27 to play on baskets by Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) and Reed, but the Mustangs answered with an 11-4 run in the next 2:04 to put the lead back to double digits. Mount Mercy hit three 3-point baskets during the run.
Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) led the Kohawks with 20 points, while Reed added 14. Mims and Emily Greiner scored a game-high 27 points apiece for Mount Mercy, as they both hit seven 3-pointers. In her first game back from injury after missing the last 10 games, sophomore Mary Halvorson (Waterville, Iowa/Waukon) scored eight points. Ware and Hayes added seven for Coe.
Hayes finished with a game-high nine rebounds, with Waskow adding eight. Reed had a career-high in steals (four) and assists (four), while Waskow had a career-high five steals. Hayes blocked two shots.
The difference in the game was the shooting from downtown, as Coe was just 2-of-12 (16.7%) and Mount Mercy was 17-of-28 (60.7%). Both teams shot over 43 percent from the field, as Coe was 28-of-64 (43.8%) and the Mustangs were 29-of-63 (46.0%).
Coe returns to Iowa Conference play on Wednesday, as they host Simpson. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse. The Kohawks and Storm have shared the last two Iowa Conference Titles.
