Four Score in Double Figures as New Paltz Defeats Cortland, 68-60

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Kaitlin Clifford (Staten Island/Curtis) and Shanay Bradley (Bronx/New Explorers) scored 17 points each to lead four double-figure scorers as New Paltz defeated Cortland, 68-60, in a SUNYAC women's basketball matchup.

Bradley made 8-of-11 shots from the floor and also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Hawks (7-7, 5-2 SUNYAC). Clifford finished with six assists and five steals. Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn/Bishop Kearney) recorded 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and a game-high seven assists.

Cortland (8-7, 3-5 SUNYAC) was led by Brittany Cohen's (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) 10 points and five assists. Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) and Micki Volpini (Newfield) scored nine points each. Byrne made 3-of-4 three-pointers. Megan Maycumber (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored seven points and led the Red Dragons with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Cortland shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-of-9 from three-point range, and led 36-33 at intermission. New Paltz, however, opened the second half on a 21-3 run. Bradley scored eight points and Clifford netted five points in that stretch as the Hawks took a 54-39 lead.

The hosts got back to within eight points twice, the first time at 55-47 after a Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) layup with 6:32 left. Fisher responded with a layup 10 seconds later to re-establish a double-figure lead. Cortland were back within eight at 66-58 with 1:17 left on an Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) layup, and the Red Dragons quickly forced a turnover. Cortland, however, turned the ball back over and neither team scored until Clifford sank a foul shot with 36 seconds left.

New Paltz held Cortland to 32 percent shooting in the second half, 1-of-6 from three-point range. The Hawks finished at 39 percent shooting compared to Cortland's 40 percent, but the Red Dragons turned the ball over 23 times to 16 for New Paltz. Both teams struggled from the foul line – Cortland made just 9-of-21 attempts and New Paltz was 11-of-20.
