CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Springfield College saw four players reach double-digits in the scoring column as it defeated MIT, 60-43, in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kelly Slattery (Somers, Conn.) tallied a game-high 17 points for the Pride, which improved to 9-6 on the year and 5-3 in league play. Junior Lauren Sascha Burton (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Tamara Pena (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) both posted 11 points for the Engineers (7-7, 3-5 NEWMAC).

After trading baskets to start the game, Springfield generated a 10-2 spurt that resulted in a 12-5 advantage after three minutes expired. A basket by sophomore Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) followed by two free throws from freshman Mari Kordell (Ijamsville, Md.) brought MIT within three at the 16:15 mark. The Pride used an 11-4 spurt during the next six minutes to increase its margin to 23-13. Burton buried a three-pointer on the Cardinal and Gray's next possession but the visitors mounted an 18-7 run en route to a 41-23 lead at halftime.

Springfield scored eight of the first 10 points of the second stanza, establishing its largest margin of the day at 24 points (49-25) with 16:39 left to play. Despite the deficit, MIT continued to attack and closed the game by outscoring the Pride, 18-11.

In addition to their team-high scoring performances, Burton tacked on five rebounds while Pena notched four boards, two assists, one block, and one steal. Hunt posted six points as junior Anna Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) grabbed seven rebounds. Kordell along with freshman Alexxis Isaac (San Antonio, Texas) recorded four and three steals, respectively, while junior Rebecca Odim (Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled four rebounds. As a team, the Engineers finished with a 17-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Freshman Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) compiled 15 rebounds and 11 points for the Pride as senior Kelly Murphy (Mechanicsville, N.Y.) added 10 points and 10 boards. Junior Colleen Dignum (Albany, N.Y.) registered 12 points coming off the bench while junior Emily Walker (East Lyme, Conn.) chipped in six rebounds. Senior Andrea Butler (Cohoes, N.Y.) rounded out the squad with seven assists and two steals.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play at home on Wednesday, Jan. 18. MIT will host Wheaton College while Springfield will take on Mount Holyoke College.
