Eastern Mennonite Stops Guilford, 60-50

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Shakeerah Sykes scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Eastern Mennonite University's 60-50 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win over visiting Guilford College Saturday.

The win moved the Royals (11-1, 8-1 ODAC) into first place in the league with Guilford (11-3, 8-1 ODAC), which suffered its first loss in 11 games.

Jazlyn Gibbs sparked the Quakers to a 29-27 halftime lead by scoring 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half. Guilford built the lead up to five early in the second half and led 39-38 with 13:18 left in the game before Marla Young's three-pointer triggered a 22-11 game-ending run for the Royals. Eastern Mennonite forced nine of Guilford's 20 turnovers in the second half, which led to 15 points.

Bianca Ygarza contributed 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench for Eastern Mennonite. Stephanie Rheinheimer also scored 11. Alisa Brown netted all nine of her points in the second half. For the game, the Royals scored 25 points off of Guilford turnovers and turned the ball over just 10 times themselves.

Gabby Oglesby scored 13 points and had six rebounds for Guilford, which lost for the first time since Nov. 18.

The Quakers look to start a new streak Tuesday (1/17) when they host Emory & Henry College at 7:00 p.m.
