Thomas More's Rally Falls Short in 68-65 Loss at Saint Vincent

(LATROBE, Pa.) - The Thomas More College women's basketball team's rally fell short today (Saturday, January 14, 2012) at it fell, 68-65, to Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Robert S. Carey Center in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the PAC.  With the win, the Bearcats improve to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the PAC.

Thomas More jumped out to an early 6-3 lead when junior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) made a three-pointer with 16:46 to play in the opening half.  Saint Vincent answered with a 17-6 run capped by two Brittany Sedlock free-throws to take a 20-12 lead with 8:56 to play in the opening half.  The Saints responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 20-18 with 7:46 to play in the first half when Long made a three-pointer.  The Bearcats closed out the half on a 17-7 run to take a 37-25 halftime lead when Jessica Welch made a jumper with 36-seconds to play in the half.

Saint Vincent opened the second half on a 6-0 run to increase the lead to 43-25 when Sedlock made two free-throws with 18:06 to play in the game.  Thomas More responded with a 27-16 run to cut the lead to 59-52 with 2:53 to play in the game when sophomore guard Katie Kitchen (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) completed a three-point play.  Saint Vincent answered with a 5-1 run to extend the lead to 65-53 when Elle Collins made two free-throws with 1:41 to play in the game.  Thomas More closed out the game on a 12-4 run capped by a Long three-pointer with six-seconds to play in the game, but it wasn't enough as Saint Vincent won the game, 68-65.

Long led the Saints in scoring with a career-high 26 points and Kitchen joined her in double-figures with 12.  Junior forward/center Katie Kees (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) led the team on the boards with eight rebounds, while Long and junior guard Jill Brunsman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) led the team in assists with four each and Long led the team in steals with four.

The Saints will close out the first half on the PAC schedule on Wednesday (January 18) when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to play Chatham University at 6 p.m.
