WASHINGTON – The Cardinals hung tough with No. 15 Juniata all afternoon, but in the end the Eagles outlasted CUA 70-60 inside the DuFour Center on Saturday.  CUA pulled to within 60-56 with 4:58 to play, but Juniata outscored the Cardinals 10-4 the rest of the way to remain unbeaten in the Landmark Conference.

Jenny McGann drilled a 3-pointer early on to give CUA a 3-0 lead, but Juniata went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to open up an 11-5 lead.

CUA battled back and pulled to within two on Emily Grabiak's jumper at the 14:06 mark, but Natalie Glinsky answered with a three for the Eagles to put the visitors back up by five.

Katarina Owunna's jumper with 9:20 to play in the half knotted the score at 20 and Jill Woerner's basket one minute later put the Cardinals on top 24-22.

Juniata took a 33-29 lead on Jordan Speck's trifecta at the 4:26 mark, and another three by Speck with 3:14 to go made it a six-point lead for the Eagles.

The Cardinals pulled to within two on Woerner's basket with 1:29 remaining, and the score stayed that way as the teams retired for halftime.

Like she did in the first half, McGann sank an early bucket in the second to knot the score at 39, and after Woerner splashed a jumper of her own, CUA was on top 41-39.

A three from Grabiak at the 14:57 mark put the Cardinals ahead 46-44, but Juniata reeled off seven straight to surge back on top, 51-46.

Kate McDonald hit a jumper with 6:25 remaining to give Juniata a seven-point lead, but Woerner's jumper and Claire McEvily's free throw brought the Cardinals to within four with 4:58 to play.

Speck sank two free throws and Ashton Bankos got free for a layup though, and the Eagles extended to an eight-point advantage with 2:37 on the clock.

The Cardinals got to within six with 1:40 remaining, but were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

Woerner finished with 18 points for CUA, while Grabiak added 10.  Owunna pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and Rachel Ferri dished out five helpers.

Speck scored a game-high 25 points on 7 of 13 shooting for the Eagles, with McDonald adding 20 points and 13 rebounds.  Juniata sank 14 of 17 free throws  and finished with 12 steals.

The Cardinals travel to New York for their next game, taking on Merchant Marine Academy on Friday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m.
