Lakeland gets hot from three, tops Edgewood College

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team tried to keep the momentum they gained from their win on Tuesday night going when they travelled to Lakeland College. However, the Muskies' full-court pressure defense and three-point shooting was too much for the Eagles as Lakeland took the contest 89-67.

In the first three minutes the two teams exchanged the lead three times before the Muskies (9-4, 4-3 NAC) grabbed the lead and extended it. Leah Eisner gave the Muskies a five point lead when she made a layup with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half. Mariah Hill answered with a three-point basket to cut the deficit to two, but Eisner made two more layups to push the lead back to six.

With 12:28 left, Jenna Coenen drained a three-point basket to cut the deficit in half, but Lakeland rolled off eight straight points, including back-to-back triples from Becca Paulson and Becky Mayo to take control of the game. Dareon Henderson finally ended the spurt with a jump shot.

Over the final 5:39 of the first half, Lakeland went on a 16-5 run to take a commanding 43-23 lead at the break. The Muskies shot a blistering 51.6 percent in the first half, while their pressing defense kept the Eagle offense off rhythm, holding Edgewood College to just a 28.0 field goal percentage.

Edgewood College (5-9, 4-4 NAC) came out and scored the first five points of the second half behind a Hill three-point basket and Chelsey Watkins fast break layup. However, the Muskies quickly weathered the storm and pushed their lead back to 20 points. Every time the Eagles scored from that point on, Lakeland had an answer to either match the Eagle bucket or extend their lead. Lakeland earned their largest advantage of 26 points with just more than five minutes left.

The Eagles cut their deficit to 20 points on numerous occasions throughout the final 11 minutes, but the Muskies answered each time, not letting the Eagles go on a run, en route to the 89-67 victory.

Lakeland shot a blistering 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from three-point range while shooting 46.9 percent from the field. The Eagles shot better in the second half, shooting 52.9 percent in the frame. The Eagles ended the contest with a 42.4 field goal percentage, marking their best shooting performance of the season.

For the Muskies it was Eisner that led the way with 18 points while Mayo and Becca Tilleman chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Tilleman also added a game-high eight asssts.

Alison Tobin led the Eagles with 18 points and nine rebounds, coming within one rebound of a double-double. Hill follwed with 13 points while Melanie Walker handed out a team-high seven assists. Coenen ended the game with nine points and six rebounds.

The Eagles will next be in action on Saturday when the welcome Rockford College to the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Edgewood College will provide both live video and live stats, with the links being found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
