The Lakeland College women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game with an 89-67 victory over visiting Edgewood College on Thursday night.
The Muskies (9-4, 4-3 NAC) controlled the game from the opening tip and would trail just twice, by no more than one point, and would take a commanding 20-point, 43-23 halftime lead.
In the first half, the Muskies were dominant inside and outside, outscoring the Eagles 20-4 in the paint, 18-0 in points off turnovers and the Muskies reserves outscored the Eagles 21-5. Lakeland shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the field and 37.5 percent (3-for-8) from the 3-point line while also shooting 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Their defense stifled Edgewood, holding them to just 28 percent (7-fpr-25) from the field, 25 percent (2-for-8) from the 3-point line and 70 percent (7-for-10) from the charity stripe.
Lakeland junior Becky Mayo led all scorers with eight points and five rebounds in the half, while Alison Tobin had eight points and four rebounds to lead the Eagles.
In the second half the Muskies continued to cruise as Edgewood wouldn't get to within more than 15 points for the remainder of the game. The Eagles shot better in the second half, outscoring Lakeland 28-10 in the paint and 15-5 on second chance points, however, they couldn't slow down the Muskies as Lakeland shot 42.4 percent (14-for-33) from the field and went 9-for-17 (53 percent) from behind the arc while hitting 9-of-10 free throws.
The Muskies shot a season high 46.9 percent from the field, 48 percent from the 3-point line and had a season-high 22 assists while committing a season-low 10 turnovers.
Sophomore Leah Eisner had a season and game-high 18 points and seven rebounds as well as setting a career-high in free throws, going 8-for8. Mayo finished with 14 points and six rebounds while senior Becca Tilleman added 12 points and had eight assists.
Lakeland returns to action on Monday, Jan. 12, when they host Northern Athletics Conference North Division foe Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Tip is 7 p.m.
