NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Led by the first career double-double by freshman Camry Green, the Captains surged past the Averett Cougars (8-5, 4-2) today, winning the team's fifth straight by a final score of 62-43. CNU improved to 10-3 overall, 5-1 in USA South action behind Green's game-high 13 points and 11 rebounds.
CNU led wire-to-wire in the contest, leading by as many as 24 in the second half. The Captains defense led the way in the first half, holding the Cougars to just 25% shooting on 6-of-24 from the field, and CNU forced 12 first half turnovers leading to 13 points.
Green nearly posted a double-double just in the first half despite logging just nine minutes of action. The rookie center scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. She added a blocked shot and one steal to give CNU a lift off the bench.
Junior Kelly Halverson drained a pair of three's to finish the first half with six points and senior Lauren Gural also had five points with three rebounds.
Both teams saw improved shooting in the second half, as the Captains finished the second stanza at 44.4% shooting (12-27) and Averett knocked down 33.3% of their shots (9-27).
The Cougars managed to just trade buckets with the Captains for the first ten minutes of the half but a 10-2 run capped by a short jumper by Halverson with 6:28 remaining gave CNU the 24-point advantage, 57-33.
Green finished the night 6-of-10 from the field with 13 points, adding 11 rebounds. Gural finished in double figures with 12 points, six rebounds a steal and two blocks, while senior Kimmy Hopkins added six points, three assists, three blocks and a steal. Sophomore reserve point guard Andrea Hobbs dished a game-high six assists.
The Captains held leading scorer and rebounder Kyana Smith in check, allowing just six points and four rebounds, but Kaneshia Slade and Liz Martin filled in nicely with 10 and 11 rebounds respectively. Martin added six points while Shannon Smith came off the bench to lead the squad with eight points in the game.
CNU now looks ahead to one of the toughest tests on the conference schedule, preseason favorite Greensboro College. The Captains travel to Greensboro this Saturday at 2:00 pm.
