Holleran helps Arcadia sink New Jersey City

GLENSIDE, Pa.:  First year Michaela Holleran came off the bench and shot the lights out of Kuch Center's Alumni Gymnasium, draining all 8 of her three-point attempts to finish with a career high 24 points as Arcadia University hung an 84-67 loss on the Knights of New Jersey City University in out-of-conference women's basketball play Monday evening.

Holleran (Gilbertsville, PA/Pope John Paul) tied the program record for 8 three-pointers in a single game, set by Jennifer Killough '96 on Feb. 20, 1995 against Chestnut Hill College, however, the first year stands all alone as the new program record holder for single-game three point percentage (100%).

New Jersey City managed to jump out to a 12-2 lead after the first four minutes before Arcadia answered with a 14-3 run capped off by Holleran's first of five opening-half treys.  That bucket put Arcadia in front by one, 16-15 with 13:59 remaining in a half that saw seven lead changes.

A second Holleran three at 8:58 knotted the score back up at 23-all and at 8:23 junior Angie Adams (Elkins Park, PA/Abington Friends) hit the back end of a one-and-one to keep her team in front 24-23.  Holleran extended Arcadia's lead to four when she nailed her fourth from long-range at 7:43, catching the ball outside the top-right side of the arc, ball faking her NJCU defender and getting the open look for a 27-23 Arcadia advantage.  Number five came with just 46 seconds to go before halftime, this time from the left side, nothing but net and a seven point advantage for Arcadia at the break, 39-32.

After Holleran's fifth three point bucket of the opening half, the first year turned to acknowledge the sideline referee's kudos with a shoulder shrug similar to Michael Jordan's 1992 NBA Finals shrug after he hit 6 first half three's against the Portland Trailblazers.

New Jersey City (3-9 overall, 0-3 NJAC) must have missed the halftime memo from first year head coach Amy Mulligan because Holleran was left open twice in a 33 second span to open the second half and made no mistake about depositing triples' six and seven to up Arcadia's lead to double-figures, 45-32 at 19:26.

A three ball from senior Christine Taylor (Navron, PA/Garden Spot) made it 50-34 Arcadia with 16:55 to go. Holleran's final money ball came with 1:54 to play to cap Arcadia's scoring sealing the 17 point victory as the team improves to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the month of January.

After Arcadia shot just 23.5% from three-point land on Saturday in a home loss to Eastern, on an overall poor shooting afternoon by the Knights, finishing just 25.7% from the field, the same team found their shooting touch this evening and shot a season high 60% from three-point range and 53.4% from the floor.  The Knights also sank 10 of 13 from the line (76.9%).

Four players placed in double-figure scoring for Arcadia.  First year Victoria Roukas (Palisades Park, NJ/Immaculate Conception) scored 18 and pulled in 7 rebounds.  Junior Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) scored 10 and led Arcadia with 9 rebounds while sophomore Jenna Crothers (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) added 10 points and dished out 2 assists along with 2 steals.  Adams finished with 7 points and registered a game high 7 assists and team-high 4 steals.  Taylor finished with 8 points and 4 assists.

NJCU was led by Gabrielle Rivera's 17 points and 5 steals while Maria Suarez and Alnisa Hernaiz scored 11 apeice.

Arcadia returns to Commonwealth Conference play on the road at Alvernia University this Wednesday, Jan. 11, an 8 p.m. tip-off, looking for their first league win of the season.
