BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior guard Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) hit five 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 17 points as the University of New England led start-to-finish in a 66-47 win over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Tuesday evening at James A. Beaudry Gymnasium.
The Nor'easters improved to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Fighting Scots fell a game below .500 at 5-6 (0-4 CCC). UNE has now won its last nine meetings with Gordon.
Paradis was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc, including a trey from five steps beyond the arc just before halftime to give Big Blue a 33-20 advantage heading into the break. Paradis finished with seven rebounds, seven steals, and two blocked shots to help the cause. Her 17 points moved Paradis into seventh place on UNE's career scoring list with 1,289 (passing Chris Grillon [WC '96] and Lisa Nejezchleba [UNE '91]), and her seven steals matched a career-best.
Paradis' solid all-around game was augmented by a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double by senior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine). First-year forward Margaret Carlson (West Haven, Conn.) came off the bench to contribute a career highs in points (9) and boards (7).
First-year Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) tallied 13 points and nine rebounds before fouling out to lead the way for Gordon. Classmate Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ontario) had 11 points, and first-year Aly Towle (Rochester, N.H.) added nine points to go with eight assists.
Paradis drilled a three 15 seconds into the contest, and the Nor'easters would remain ahead the rest of the way. Leading by six (23-17) with under five minutes to play in the first frame, UNE closed the half on a 10-3 run to take a 13-point cushion into the locker room. Paradis had 12 points, including four 3-pointers, in the opening 20 minutes.
The Nor'easters were never threatened in the second half, with their lead cresting at 22 on three separate occasions.
UNE held a 45-32 advantage on the backboards and forced a total of 28 Gordon turnovers. The Nor'easters also made 8 of 18 attempts (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc.
Big Blue returns to play Thursday when Curry College comes to Biddeford for a 5:30 p.m. game. Gordon heads to Bristol, R.I. that same evening for a 6 p.m. start at Roger Williams University.
