Lightning Coasts to 62-32 Triumph Over NYU-Poly

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Jaleesa Gordon's 17 points led three Lehman players in double figures and the visiting Lightning used a 17-0 run over the final six minutes of the first half on the way to an impressive 63-32 win over Polytechnic Institute of New York University on Wednesday night.

Helping lead the charge along with Gordon were Leslie Mencia, who posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Amanda De La Cruz, who scored eight of her 10 points during the game's decisive run.

Already leading 21-13, the Lightning blitzed NYU Poly from all angles beginning with two quick jumpers by De La Cruz on back-to-back possessions.  After another basket by the Lightning senior, Mencia and Gordon got in on the act with each hitting from the floor to raise the lead to 31-13 with two minutes to go.  Wanting in, Paula Robinson dropped in a bucket before a Gordon free throw and baskets by De La Cruz and Gordon closed out the scoring with Lehman possessing a bloated 38-13 halftime edge.  Credit for the wide margin can also be attributed to the Fightning Blue Jays' eight misfires down the stretch.

The Brooklyn school's offensive futility was characterized with just over one minute to play in the half when three different players missed shots during the course of a single offensive possession.  For the game NYU Poly shot just 20 percent (10-for-50) from the floor, while Lehman shot 47 percent.

Making her first start for the Lightning, newcomer Jasmin Castro-Lopez notched two points and five rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

Lehman is back in action on Friday for a CUNYAC battle with John Jay College at the Bloodhounds' gym in Manhattan.
