More news about: Clark

Worcester, Mass. – The backcourt combination of Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) and Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) proved to be too much for MIT, leading host Clark University to their sixth straight conference victory with a 76-36 win over the Engineers in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

That duo combined to outscore MIT 38-36, as the Cougars surpassed their win total from last season and improved to 10-3 overall and remain undefeated in league play (6-0). The Engineers meanwhile, have now dropped consecutive conference games to slip to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in NEWMAC action.

Clark clicked on all cylinders in their 40-point victory, setting season-highs in points (76), field goal percentage (63.8), total rebounds (48) and assists (21).

The Engineers struggled offensively the entire contest, opening the game missing their first 16 shots and going scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes.

After Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) snapped MIT's scoring drought with an inside basket, the score stood at 14-2. and The Cougars then embarked on a quick 12-3 run capped by a Condon steal and finish to make the score 26-5 with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Sharon Hao (San Jose, Calif.) came off the bench and scored eight of the half's final 28 points to breathe some life into the Engineers and the Cougar lead dwindled to 37-22 at the half.

Any thoughts of a second half comeback were quickly dashed as Clark opened up the frame on a 14-3 spurt in the first 3:52, highlighted by ten points from Reilly, who made a pair of layups, a three-pointer and converted a conventional three-point play during the run.

The lead ballooned to 35 with a little less than ten minutes remaining after the Cougars ran off 14 of 18 points over a four minute span that saw Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) drop in the first triple of her career and Esther Cohn (Chapel Hill, N.C.) get free inside for a pair of baskets.

Clark's edge reached its peak at 40 when the Cougars went on a 9-1 run capped by a Jackie O'Connor (Spencer, Mass.) three-pointer that made the score 76-36.

The Cougar defense held MIT to 16 percent shooting (11-for-68) for the game and just 4-for-32 in the second half (12.5 percent).

Offensively, Clark was extremely efficient passing the ball, totaling 21 assists on 30 baskets and connecting on six of 11 three-pointers (54.5 percent).

One of the bright spots for the Engineers was their performance on the offensive glass, where they pulled down 22 rebounds, and in the passing lane where they collected 16 steals and forced 22 turnovers.

Reilly finished the game with her first career double-double, registering 19 points, ten rebounds and four assists. Condon, meanwhile, also had 19 points to go along with five rebounds, six assists and three steals. Kate Minister (Manchester, England) came off the bench to tally eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and four blocks in 21 minutes for the Cougars.

Hao paced the Engineer offense with 12 points and four boards and Hunt finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Clark, winners of ten of their last 11 games, will visit Smith on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. for a rematch of their NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinal matchup of a season ago.

MIT meanwhile will travel to Babson on Wednesday to take on the Beavers, who are riding a 51-game conference winning streak.
