Bulldog Women's Basketball Rolls to Victory over Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC Opener

With a diversified and effective offense, the University of Redlands women's basketball team ran away with a solid 70-43 victory over the visiting Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Thursday's opening Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition. Leading wire to wire, the Bulldogs gained at least two points from 12 different players and shot 59.2% for the game. In addition, the Maroon and Gray bench accounted for 28 points.

Highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from junior guard Ashley Sevilla(San Diego, CA), Redlands scored the first 14 points of the game on 7-for-8 shooting in less than four minutes. From there, the Bulldogs never looked back while maintaining a double-digit lead through the final whistle.

Senior guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) dominated the scoring with 17 points, which came on a perfect 8-for-8 night. With a game-leading five assists, she also distributed the ball well for a team that saw 11 players provide at least one dish on the night.

Defensively, sophomore forward Brittany Oster (Agoura Hills, CA) stepped up by swatting five Sagehen shots and pulling in seven rebounds.

Overall, Redlands out-rebounded its opponents by a 35-23 margin.

Sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, CA) and junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, CA) led the Sagehens (2-10) with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs (6-5) look forward to the first conference doubleheader of the season on Saturday when they welcome the Poets of Whittier College to Currier Gym. The women take the floor at 5 p.m., before the men tip off at approximately 7 p.m.
