DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Playing on its home court for the first time in five weeks, Delaware Valley College led from start to finish, en route to a 71-59 victory over non-conference foe Rosemont College.
The Aggies, who last took the James Work Gymnasium hardwood on November 30, improved to 8-4 on the season. They will return to Freedom Conference play next Wednesday, January 11 (6:00 p.m.) when they travel to Wilkes University. Rosemont fell to 5-5 with Thursday's loss.
Delaware Valley sprinted out to a 22-9 lead, thanks in part to its defense as they held the Ravens to 2-for-22 shooting during that stretch. Emily Soper had eight points while Brenna Coll hit a pair of 3-pointers to key the quick start.
The Aggies increased the advantage to as many as 20 in the first half before heading into the locker room with a 38-22 lead. They shot 42.9 percent from the field while Rosemont finished the first 20 minutes with a 9-for-39 effort (23.1%).
Delaware Valley went up by 22 in the second half, but a 17-4 Raven spurt, including eight by Dominique Sellers, made it a 54-45 contest. Soper answered for the Aggies as she scored all eight of the Aggies' points in an 8-2 run for a 15-point advantage with 4:48 remaining.
Rosemont made one last run, mostly after Soper fouled out, and pulled to within six, 63-57, as Brittany Wilson hit a trey with 1:34 left on the clock. However, Delaware Valley freshman Grace Mirack had back-to-back layups to put the game away.
Mirack notched a career-best 17 points to pace a balance Aggie attack. She also added five rebounds and three assists. Soper finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four rebounds while Coll contributed 15 points and six boards. Brittany Battinieri added seven points and six assists in the win.
Sellers came off the bench to lead Rosemont with 13 points. Elizabeth Coyne finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Ashley Montecchio had 10 points and seven boards.
