UMHB women fall to Ozarks

Clarksville, AR - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team stormed back from a double-digit halftime lead only to see the comeback fall short in the final minute of a 73-63 loss to the University of the Ozarks Thursday night in Clarksville, Arkansas. The Cru women lose their eighth straight game to fall to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in American Southwest Conference play on the year. The Eagles improve to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in ASC play with the victory.

UMHB would take its only lead of the game at 11-10 early in the first half, but Ozarks went on a 10-0 run to grab a nine-point lead at 20-11. The Cru would cut the gap to one point late in the first half before the Eagles closed the half with another 10-0 run to take a 36-25 halftime lead. UMHB battled back in the second half and cut the lead to three on a Brittany Zamora three-pointer with 7:59 remaining. The Eagles pushed the lead back to 12 points before the Cru fought back again. Ashlee Adams converted a three-point play with 36 seconds left to pull UMHB back to within four, but the Cru would not score again as Ozarks iced the game with four free-throws and a steal and lay-up to close out the scoring.

Adams topped UMHB with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cortney Poncik added 12 points, hitting 4-8 from three-point range and Gabby Guzman chipped in 11 points. Zamora had nine points and Jovana Miles pulled down nine rebounds for the Cru.

April Young led Ozarks with 23 points on 7-12 shooting. Sabrina Goddard added 16 points and eight rebounds, Ashley Barry poured in 11 points and grabbed nine boards and Lacey Phillips had 10 points.

Ozarks shot 62 percent in the first half and finished at 49 percent for the game. UMHB hit just 31 percent from the field and was 10-18 from the free-throw line compared to Ozarks' totals of 23-29 from the stripe.

UMHB will return to action with a 1:00 PM tip-off at U.T.-Dallas Saturday in Richardson. The Cru will then return home to host Concordia Texas in an ASC West Division showdown next Tuesday evening at the Mayborn Campus Center.
