St. Mary's City, Md. – Marymount University's women's basketball team kicked off the New Year on a high note, defeating St. Mary's (Md.) 62-52 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.  With the win, the Saints snap a six-game losing-streak and move to 4-9 overall on the season and 2-3 in league play.

Three Saints scored in double-figures, led by Sam Spencer with 15.  Tynisha Parks added 14 and Julie Tomesheski had 10.

Tomesheski led Marymount with nine rebounds and four steals while Katelyn Fischer tallied a team-high nine assists.

The Saints were solid from the floor all night, converting 46.4 percent of their shots from the field and 50% of their attempts from downtown.  Spencer picked up all of her points from beyond the arc, nailing five on the night, while MU outscored the Seahawks 32-14 in the paint.

St. Mary's (4-9, 2-2 CAC) led early for the opening eight minutes before a Spencer trifecta tied things up at 11-11 at the 11:54 mark.  Another three from Spencer gave the Saints their first lead of the game on their next possession, a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.

The Seahawks would keep things close down the stretch by holding off MU rallies and pulling within three points on multiple occasions.  Marymount held SMC to just one point over the final 6:28 to seal the victory.

Raven Owens led SMC with 19 points while Shana Lewis added 11.  Jasmine Jones was credited for 12 assists in the loss.

Marymount returns to the friendly confines of the Verizon Sports Arena on Saturday, January 7, against visiting Hood in CAC action.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.marymount.edu/athletics/wBasketball and selecting the "live stats" and "live video" links.
