Macalester scored nine unanswered points late in the game to take an eight-point lead with under a minute left, and held on to gain a 67-63 MIAC victory in Northfield over Carleton and start 2012 on a winning note. Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots to pace the Scots, who improve to 4-5 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

Joining Schiedermayer in double figures were Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) with 14 points and Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) with 11. Wood added nine rebounds, and Rene pulled down eight boards.

Four Scots handed out three assists each: Wood, Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo), Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) and Emma Leyden (So., Berkeley, Calif. / Head Royce).

Akemi Arzouman paced Carleton with 25 points. Jenny Ramey added 11 points and seven assists. The Knights drop to 1-8 overall, 0-6 in MIAC play.

The Knights led 19-11 at the 7:20 mark of the first half and were on top 25-21 at the intermission.

After shooting just 24% in the first half, Macalester was 55% from the floor in the second period. Schiedermayer netted 18 of her 22 points in the half, going 8-for-9 from the field. Rene added 10 second half points with the help of three three-pointers. The Scots took the lead for good at 58-56 with 2:46 to play and led 64-56 with :36 left.

Macalester out-rebounded Carleton 53-35, hustling for 22 offensive boards, and enjoyed a +5 turnover margin. The Scots had a 42-28 advantage in points in the paint.

The Scots play host Wednesday (Jan. 4) to Augsburg at 7:30 p.m.
