Regals Open Host Event with Wire-to-Wire Win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran defeated Northwestern (MN) College 63-51 on Friday afternoon to open the two-day Best Western Posada Royale Holiday Classic. Jazmyne Porter and Cameron Jones combined for 28 points and 13 rebounds off the Regals bench in the win.

Albion defeated William Smith 57-43, and Bowdoin took down Riviera 90-66 in other Friday action inside Gilbert Arena on the home floor for CLU basketball.

Cal Lutheran 63, Northwestern (MN) 51 - F
Taylor Autry, Erica Whitley, Chelsey Hastigan and Meaghan Goodenough provided the offense during an 11-2 run to open Friday's finale. Three of the team's five first half 3-point attempts came during that stretch and gave the Regals a lead they would hold the entire way.

Trailing by 11 Northwestern responded with 10 unanswered points including a pair of triples from Chanel Madson. Twice she scored to put the Eagles within one, but the Regals countered with 11 consecutive points to go ahead 34-22 with 3:26 left in the opening frame and led by 14 at intermission.

Nine of the 10 Regals that saw first half floor time contributed in the scoring column. Whitley knocked down both of her 3-point attempts and led the squad with three assists and a blocked shot. However the CLU reserves provided solid individual performances in Friday's victory.

Jazmyne Porter contributed 16 points, six rebounds and six steals in 20 minutes off the bench. She combined with Cameron Jones to score 28 of the team's 32 bench points.

Northwestern's reserves totaled just four points.Cal Lutheran enjoyed a double-digit lead throughout a majority of the second half as Northwestern never closed within six points over the final 20 minutes of regulation. Northwestern's Mollie Sir collected a game-high 17 points including a trio of 3-pointers. She led the Eagles with five steals and three assists in the loss. 

Teammate Jessica Fife collected 15 rebounds and went 3-for-4 at the foul line. Fife was the lone Eagle to miss at the charity stripe as Northwestern knocked down 15-of-16 for the game.

Albion 57, William Smith 43 - F
During game two of the afternoon Albion College got off to a hot start while the William Smith College Herons struggled with the scoreboard showing a 35-8 advantage for the Britons at the intermission. The "no quit" mentality of William Smith kept the squad in the game until the final buzzer sounded. Albion walked away victorious, 57-43 despite the Herons bridging the gap in the final period. 

Albion looked to senior Patty Rewa who put on a show at both ends of the court producing an 18-point, 10- rebound double-double, leading all players in both categories. Also earning a double-double for the Britons was Nicole Dennis, who scored 14 points and pulled down 10 boards as well.

William Smith's Jacqueline Murphy also had 10 rebounds. After a 2-for-26 shooting effort in the opening stanza, William Smith came back to shoot 42.9 percent from the field in the second half. The Herons' leading scorer on the afternoon was Erin O'Brien with 15 points. 

Bowdoin 90, Rivier 66 - F
In the tournament opener Bowdoin College and Rivier College tipped-off for the first of five games on the day as the Posada Royale and Men's Thriven Financial for Lutherans Tournament's overlap today. The Polar Bears doubled up the Raiders in the opening half, taking a 40-20 lead at the intermission, and cruised to a 90-66 victory.

As a squad Bowdoin shot 64.3 percent from the field in the second half to finish at a 50 percent clip. Four players reached double figures with Jill Henrickson pacing the pack and all players with 20 points and five steals. She and teammate Ellery Gould each grabbed seven rebounds to lead all players. Kaitlin Donahoe handed out a game-high seven assists to go along with a 15-point, four-steal performance.

Rivier also shot much better in the second half at 53.8 percent to finish at 47.8 overall in the game. The Raiders never stopped battling as the senior-freshman sister tandem of Amanda and Deanna Purcell led the attack with 18 and 13 points, respectively. Jaclyn Penniman came down with six of the 24 Raiders' rebounds in the contest.

The conclusion of the Best Western Posada Royale Holiday Classic will take place on Saturday, Dec. 31, with Rivier and William Smith kicking things off at 2 p.m. followed by host Cal Lutheran versus Bowdoin at 4 p.m. and concluding with Northwestern and Albion at 6 p.m.
