REDLANDS, Calif. – Scoring was tough to come by for Edgewood College and UC-Santa Cruz in their final game at the Redlands Winter Classic, but the Eagles leaned on their defense and rebounding to pull out a 37-34 victory. The Eagles limited the Banana Slugs to just 11 points in the first half and 18.3 percent shooting for the game.
UC-Santa Cruz (5-9) scored the first three points of the game, until Edgewood College took the lead for good. Jenna Coenen made a pair of free throws and Mariah Hill scored a layup to grab a 4-3 lead. At 6-5, Edgewood College (4-6) went on a 7-0 run, led by three points from Melanie Walker, to take a 13-5 lead. The Banana Slugs closed the gap to five points with 1:29 to go before halftime, but Walker made a pair of free throws and Alison Tobin scored the final field goal of the half for a 20-11 Eagle lead.
The Slugs battled back with a 9-2 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half. A layup from UC-Santa Cruz's Bridget O'Brien tied the game at 22, but the Eagles would maintain the lead. Edgewood College responded with a 9-2 run of their own behind a pair of baskets by Brittany Bylsma.
The Banana Slugs, however, remained within one possession for most of the rest of the game. After a pair of free throws from UCSC's Alison Scarbrough made the score 36-34, the Slugs had a chance to tie the game off a sideline inbounds with eight seconds to go. UCSC inbounded to Jen Marquez, but her running layup on the right side rolled off the rim. Tobin made one of two free throws with two seconds left to seal the victory.
Tobin and Walker both recorded double-doubles to lead the Eagles' attack. Tobin scored 11 points to go with 11 rebounds, while Walker added 10 points and 11 boards of her own. The Eagles pulled down 56 rebounds, compared to the Banana Slugs 49. The 37 points marked the lowest winning score by an Eagle team in school history. The previous record was set in a 47-35 win over Lakeland College on February 1, 2005.
The Banana Slugs were led by Scarbrough who scored 10 points. Sarah Mackey of UCSC flirted with a triple-double, scoring eight points, grabbing 10 rebounds and swatting eight blocked shots.
