Blugold Women's Basketball Opens Southwestern Classic with Big Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to six games with an 81-34 victory over Trinity University (Texas) on the first day of the Southwestern University Classic today.

The Blugolds played strong right from the start and gave up just two baskets in the opening nine minutes as they built a 28-4 lead.

Eau Claire gave up just six shots from the floor in the opening half while Trinity scored three points from the free throw line. The Blugolds took a 48-16 advantage into halftime.

While the Blugolds only gave up 18 points in the second half, they scored 33, 15 fewer than the first half. But with a 47-point win, the Blugolds tied for 16th for the largest margin of victory in program history.

Eau Claire outshot Trinity substantially in both halves, and finished the game with a 51.6 percentage from the floor (33-for-64) to 27.7 percent (13-for-47) for Trinity. The Blugolds also finished with a rebounding advantage, 46-27.

Ellen Plendl (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) scored a game-high 12 points while Nicole Christianson (Sr.-Chetek, Wis.) chipped in 11 to go along with seven assists. Jess Freagon(Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) led the game with 11 rebounds.

The Blugolds improve to 9-2 on the season while Trinity drops to 3-7. The Blugolds have only faced Trinity two previous times, in 2006 and 2002, and the Blugolds came away with wins both times.

Thursday the Blugolds will take on host Southwestern University (Texas). Action will get underway at 7 p.m.
