Falcons Stay Undefeated With Win Over Thomas More

The Falcon women's basketball team came up with a big 60-50 win over No. 25 ranked Thomas More on Wednesday in a game played in Las Vegas, Nev., at the D3Hoops.com Classic.

Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) had a season-high 22 rebounds and that ties her career high. She also scored 11 points in the win giving the senior her second double-double of the year.

"Maranda had a great game and really dominated down low," said Falcon Coach Cindy Holbrook. "Our team doesn't win without her efforts on the boards."

UWRF, ranked No. 14 in this week's D3Hoops.com poll, led 28-19 at the half after the first half of the opening 20 minutes was a low scoring affair. The Falcons led throughout the first half and had a 16-15 lead with 4:50 to go. The Falcons then outscored Thomas More 12-6 the in the last four-plus minutes. Dohrn hit a layup with 3:50 to go and with 3:01 to go Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) hit two free throws to put UWRF ahead, 20-15. Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) then hit a jumper with 2:33 left to make it a 22-15 game. After a Saints basket, Tiffany Gregorich hit a three with 1:55 to play to make it a 25-17 game. Brittany Gregorich hit a free throw with 1:18 to go and with 17 seconds to play she hit two more free throws to end the first half scoring. Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) led the Falcons wtih eight first half points hitting two three-pointers. Tiffany Gregorich had seven first half pointsand she led UWRF with eight rebounds.

The Falcons had a strong 13-0 run early in the second half to take control of the contest. UWRF played some very good defense during the run and didn't allow the Saints any easy looks or attempts from the floor.

Thomas More got to within 10, 45-35, with about six minutes to play, but the Falcons scored the next six points to take a 51-35 lead. Later the Saints cut the lead to single digits, nine (51-42), with about two minuts to play. But the Falcons hit some key free throws after that to put the game away. The Falcons were 7-8 at the line in the last two minutes with Brittany Gregorich going 4-4 and Holst 3-4.

Holst led the Falcons with 17 points. Brittany Gregorich had 13 points and Tittany Gregorich, who led UWRF with five assists, added 10 giving the Falcons four players who scored in double figures. "I like the balanced scoring we had today," said Holbrook.

UWRF finished with 53 rebounds in the contest, 18 coming on on the offensive end. The 53 rebounds ties a single game high for the Falcons this year. They had also had 53 in a win over St. Scholastica on Nov. 30.

Thomas More was led by Allison Long who scored 12 points. The loss was just the second of the year for the Saints who are now 8-2 overall. The Falcons held the Saints leading scorer, Katie Kitchen, to just eight points. She was averaging 17 points going into the game.

The Falcons, now 11-0, will next play Carthage on Thursday at 9 a.m., in another game at the D3Hoops.com Classic.
