GEORGE FOX 70, WORCESTER STATE 42: Bruins Blunt Lancers to Finish 2-0 in Hawai’i

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Posting their fourth straight victory by 24 or more points, the George Fox University Bruins completed a sweep of their two-game trip tothe Hoop n Surf Women's Basketball Classic with a decisive 70-42 win over the Worcester State University Lancers Tuesday afternoon here at the McKinley High School Gym.

George Fox, ranked third in the nation in the NCAA Division III, is now 10-0 on the season following a win over Spalding University on Monday and the Worcester State victory.  The Lancers fell to 4-6 on the season.

Carrie Myers, starting at forward in place of an injured Megan Arnoldy, hit a jumper 12 seconds into the game to get George Fox off to a quick start.  Kaleigh Charette answered with a layup for Worcester State before Hannah Munger hit a pair of free throws to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead at the 19:14 mark of the first half, and they never trailed again.

Despite shooting only .303 (10-33) from the field in the first half, the Bruins gradually pulled away by holding the Lancers to a .273 mark (6-22) and forcing 12 turnovers.  The Bruins took a double-digit lead for the first time when a short jumper by Munger made it 19-9 with 8:26 left in the period, and their largest lead of the half came at 7:19 when a conventional three-point play by Keisha Gordon made it 22-9.  The halftime score was 31-20 in favor of the Bruins.

George Fox blew the game open by shooting a red-hot .552 (16-29) in the second half.  The margin ballooned to 20 points at 52-32 on a Myers layup with 10:16 remaining, and reached its zenith at 70-40 on a free throw by Breezy Rinehart-Young with 3:08 to play.

Gordon led all scorers with 19 points for the Bruins, while Munger added 18 and Jami Roos 11, including three three-pointers.  George Fox finished with a .419 shooting percentage (26-62) while limiting Worcester State to .289 (13-45).  Myers and Arianna Mohsenian hauled down nine rebounds apiece, pacing the Bruins to a 43-29 advantage on the boards.  Gordon and Roos had four assists each, and Roo made two steals.

Shannen El-Qasem led the Lancers with 11 points, and Meaghan Burns added nine points along with a team-high six rebounds.  Cheyenne Jennings handed out three assists, and Charette made three steals.       

NEXT: George Fox completes the non-conference portion of its schedule Tuesday, Dec. 27, when the Bruins visit the Concordia University-Portland Cavaliers for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff ... Worcester State goes to Western New England University on Jan. 5 for a 7:00 p.m. Eastern time game.
