The Lakeland College women's basketball team finished the Daytona Beach Shootout 2-0 after a 66-55 victory over Pacific University (Ore.) on Wednesday night.

The Muskies (5-4) once again started out fast and were able to build and maintain a large lead for most of the evening.

Sophomore Jessica Genke got the scoring started for Lakeland as she was able to draw a foul and hit the free throw for a three point play. The Muskies continued to be aggressive and got the ball in the post, building a 16-point, 25-9 lead with 6:38 left in the first half. The Boxers (6-2) were able to close the gap and trailed by 12 points, 32-20 at the half.

Junior Becky Mayo and Genke led Lakeland with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Mayo also grabbed six rebounds. As a team, Lakeland shot 48.1 percent (13-27) from the field, 33.3 percent (3-9) from the 3-point arc, and 50 percent (3-6) from the free throw line. The Muskies pressure defense forced the Boxers to take tough shots leading to a 27.3 shooting percentage (9-33) from the field and 14.3 percent (1-7) from behind the arc. Lakeland also won the battle inside, grabbing 22 rebounds to Pacific's 17.

The Boxers made some adjustments at halftime and made the game close, getting to within seven points, 58-51, at the 4:18 mark and trailing by just nine points on seven different occasions. The Muskies were able to hold off the charge with some timely 3-point shooting by senior Becca Tilleman and sophomore Taylor Jandrin and some pressure free throws to close the game.

Genke and Jandrin led the Muskies in the second half each scoring eight points, while Genke had a team-high four second half rebounds. The team shot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the field, 57.1 percent (4-7) from downtown and 57.1 percent (4-7) from the charity stripe. Pacific shot 56 percent (14-25) from the field in the second half, going 2-for-6 from the 3-point line and 5-for-8 from the free throw line.

Overall, Genke had a game-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds while Mayo added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Genke was also named to the All-Tournament team for her performance.

Lakeland returns to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they host Northland College at 5 p.m.
