SAN JUAN — Playing a regular season game outside the United States for the first time in three seasons, Elizabethtown improved its overall record to 7-3 by defeating Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart of Puerto Rico) 58-42 Sunday night.
Freshman Cheyenne Stonerook and sophomore Taylor Kreider both totaled double-doubles in the Blue Jays' victory. Stonerook led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds, marking her second double-double of the season, and first since the season opener at Susquehanna back on Nov. 16.
Kreider, the Jays' most dangerous scoring threat over the last three weeks, finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Solanco graduate is riding a streak of three straight double-doubles after last weekend's two-game outbreak in the R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic.
Jayci Scannapieco scored seven points and added seven rebounds for E-town. The Blue Jays outrebounded Sacred Heart 52-44 in the contest. Four of Scannapieco's seven rebounds came on the offensive glass and Stonerook had six offensive boards as well, leading to a 22-4 E-town advantage in second chance points.
Stonerook's 15 points led E-town's bench scoring. Along with Taylor Alwine (six), the two combined for 21 of the Jays' 27 points from reserves. Katy Fogel, Marissa Ferris and Rachel Fuehrer each had two points apiece to account for the other six bench points.
The Dolphins (Delfines) put up a good fight on their home court, trailing by just six at halftime, but it was not enough against the NCAA Division III Elizabethtown squad. Loraine Morales scored all 12 of her points in the second half to lead Sacred Heart in scoring.
Every healthy E-town player saw action in the game, including newcomer Emily Young, a freshman center from Manheim Township. Young just recently joined the team after spending the fall semester at Bucknell.
Elizabethtown will face Wheaton (Mass.) Tuesday at 11 a.m. to wrap up the Puerto Rico Classic. The Blue Jays will be Wheaton's first game in Puerto Rico, before the Lyons also take on Sacred Heart on Dec. 21.
