(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Junior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 78-62 non-conference win over Wittenberg University today (Saturday, December 17, 2011) at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 7-1 and with the loss, the Tigers fall to 3-5.
Wittenberg took an early 9-4 lead when Enri Small made a three-pointer with 16:24 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with a 15-1 run to take a 19-10 lead when freshman forward Jenny Burgoyne (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) made two free-throws at the 12:13 mark of the first half. The Tigers responded with a 10-5 run capped by two free-throws by Amber Rice to cut the lead to 24-20 with 5:07 to play in the half. The Saints put together an 11-3 run to extended the lead to 35-23 with 52-seconds to play in the opening half when sophomore guard Katie Kitchen (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a three-pointer. Wittenberg's Sarah Wilson made a lay-up with 4-seconds to play in the half to cut the lead to 35-25 at halftime.
The Tigers opened the second half on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 39-34 with 16:35 to play in the game when Amber Lara made two free-throws. Thomas More answered with a 29-13 run to build a 68-47 lead when Long made a lay-up with 4:06 to play in the game. Wittenberg closed out the game on a 15-10 run, but it wasn't enough as the Saints won the game, 78-62.
Joining Long in double-figure scoring was Kitchen with 17 points. Burgoyne led the team on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds and Kitchen added seven. Sophomore guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) led the team in assists with six and sophomore forward Moriah Corey (Louisville, Ky./Butler) led the team in blocks with two.
Thomas More returns to action on Tuesday (December 20) when it travels to Bluffton, Ohio to play Bluffton University at 6 p.m.
