Ravens Over Stubborn Knights

More news about: Rosemont

GLENSIDE, Pa. - In a game where there were eight tie scores and ten lead changes the Rosemont College Ravens women's basketball team defeated the Arcadia University Knights tonight by a final score of 67-59. The win by the Ravens puts them over "the 500 mark" going into their Winter break (5-4, 1-3 CSAC). Arcadia dropped to 1-6 (0-2 Commonwealth) with the loss in this non-conference game.

Though the Ravens started the game on a 5-0 spurt the Knights quickly rebounded. The teams shot low percentages in the half with the Ravens shooting 30.6% and the Knights 30.8%. Though the Ravens were in control in the paint, the home Knights shot 9-for-9 from the line. At the buzzer ending the first period the Ravens held a lead by the slimmest of margins, 27-26.

A trey from Arcadia's Christine Taylor put the exclamation point on a 12-5 run in the first seven minutes of the second half, giving the Knights their largest lead of the night, 38-32 with 13:42 left. The Ravens quickly shot back however. Six straight points from the Raven's junior Ashley Montecchio (Sun Valley/Aston, Pa.) tied the score at 38-38 after only 34 seconds elapsed. The Ravens pressure defense created some problems for the Knights and the Ravens capitalized. Rosemont ended a 19-3 run to take a double-digit lead at 51-41 with 10:18 left.

Still leading by ten with 8:16 remaining, the Ravens had trouble putting the game away as Arcadia chipped back with an 8-0 run to inch back to within 57-55 with 5:50 left. Rosemont then responded with their own 8-0 run to push their advantage back to ten points, 65-55 with only 2:18 remaining.

Montecchio led the Ravens scoring a career-high 32 points on 13-for-28 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line. She also was credited with 11 rebounds to score her 5th double-double of the season. First year Liz Coyne (Downingtown West/West Chester, Pa.) poured in 19 points for the Ravens with 8 boards. Senior Vanessa Johnson (G.W. Carver/Philadelphia) had 11 caroms for the visitors.

Arcadia's Christine Taylor led her team with 18 points. Jenna Crothers added 10 more to the Knights total. Jessica Campbell had eight rebounds to lead Arcadia.

The Ravens used their height advantage to help tilt the game in their direction, out-rebounding the Knights by a 63-36 count.

Rosemont returns to non-conference action after their Winter Break when they travel to Delaware Valley College on Thursday, 1/5/2012 for a game beginning at 7:00pm.
