Macalester picks up first MIAC win

Macalester played its final game until January, hosting St. Catherine Tuesday night at the Leonard Center, and forced 23 turnovers to defeat the Wildcats 75-58.  The Scots owned a 26-9 lead in points off turnovers and hustled for 24 offensive rebounds.

The Scots pick up their initial conference win of the season, and go to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the MIAC.  The Wildcats drop to 1-7 overall, 0-5 in MIAC play.

Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) had a strong all-around game for Macalester, pulling down eight offensive rebounds and finishing with 11 boards, seven assists and three steals.    In addition to getting seven helpers from Wood, Macalester received six assists from Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial).

On the scoring front, Mac was paced by Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) and Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial).  Schiedermayer made 10 baskets and posted a double-double, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  She also blocked a couple shots.  Rene dropped in 4-of-6 from outside the three-point line and wrapped up the game with 18 points and four assists.  Emma Leyden (So., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) had eight points and three steals and Shannon Rene scored eight points.

Sarina Baker led the way for St. Kate's with 21 points and Kristen Lee scored 14.

Macalester dominated the boards, out-rebounding SCU 53-38 and battling for a 24-10 lead in offensive rebounds.

The Scots never trailed in the game.  Ahead 28-27, Mac closed out the first half on an 11-4 run to take a 39-31 lead going into the intermission.  Macalester began the second half with a 16-8 rally through six minutes to extend the margin to 55-39.  The biggest lead was 21 points with just under three minutes to play.

The Scots are off until Jan. 2 when they play an MIAC game at Carleton.
