Maryville College's Tayler Smith took a Lauren Burnett fast-break pass following a missed free-throw and deposited a strong lay-up with 1.6 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Scots and exciting 69-68 victory over Berry College on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots battled back early after the Vikings dashed out to a 10 point first half advantage. After holding Berry to a 39% shooting effort while pouring in almost 47% of their shots, Maryville took a 35-31 lead into the half.
Maryville tallied 22 of their 34 second half points in the paint, scoring nine points off Berry turnovers. The score was tied on five occasions in the second half with Maryville holding only two leads during the period. Berry closed the game shooting 48% in the second half which included a 4-for-8 performance from beyond the arc.
Janell Menard's lay-up off a Tayler Smith pass tied the game a 67 with less than a minute remaining. Berry's Chanlir Segarra sank a free-throw giving Berry their last lead with 34 seconds remaining before Smith's game-winning bucket.
Berry (3-5) was led by Brittany Coughlan's 17 points. She finished 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Alexa Evans and Chanlir Segarra each added 16 points while Megan Walsh paced the Vikings on the boards with 11 rebounds.
Maryville (4-3) rallied behind Tayler Smith's double-double. She was 9-for-15 from the field for a game-high 21 points while hauling down 11 boards. Janell Menard added 19 points while going 8-for-16 from the field. The Scots out rebounded Berry 41-30 while MC's bench outscored their opponents bench 13-4.
Maryville will conclude their 2011 schedule with a trip to Lexington, Kentucky to challenge for the Transylvania Classic title on December 19-20.
