Austin, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team could not overcome a late first-half cold spell as the Cru dropped a 65-42 decision to Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Austin. The UMHB women fall to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. The Tornados improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the ASC with the victory.
The two teams would be tied at 13-13 midway through the first half, but then the Cru went cold. CTX used a 12-1 to push the lead into double figures. UMHB cut the gap to seven, but went scoreless for the final 4:34 of the first half as Concordia took a 30-20 lead into halftime. UMHB would get to within nine points again early in the second half, but the Tornados took charge from there, leading by as many as 24 points in the late going.
Jovana Miles led the Cru with 11 points and eight rebounds. Cortney Poncik added eight points and Gabby Guzman chipped in seven points and seven rebounds for UMHB.
Shamika Singleton led a balanced Concordia attack with 12 points and seven rebounds. The Tornados shot 40 percent from the field while holding the Cru to 26 percent shooting. UMHB turned the ball over 20 times, but did out rebound Concordia 48-41 in the game.
UMHB will now return home to host a pair of ASC cross-over games next week. The Cru will take on Mississippi College in a 5:30 PM start on Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM tip-off against Louisiana College next Saturday.
