MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team wanted to forget about their loss on Thursday night as quickly as possible. It is much easier to rebound at home, as the Eagles did on Saturday against Benedictine University. Edgewood College controlled the ball much better, only committing 14 turnovers, including five in the first half, in their 62-54 victory.
Edgewood College (3-4, 3-2 NAC) jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Benedictine began to come back. Benedictine tied the game at six apiece and trailed by two points at the first media timeout. Benedictine (2-7, 1-4 NAC) held a 21-16 advantage with just more than nine minutes left in the first half when the Eagle offense started to heat up. Alison Tobin hit a jump shot to start a 16-0 Edgewood College run. Melanie Walker put the Eagles ahead 23-21 with one of her two three-point baskets in the game, and Jenna Coenen drilled a three-point basket two and a half minutes later to give the Eagles a six point cushion. Benedictine scored the final four points of the half to make the score 32-25 at the break.
Megan Novak drained a three-point basket to start the second half to cut into the deficit, but Edgewood College responded. Tobin made a jumper, and after a Brittany Bylsma free throw, she sank a pair from the charity stripe. Chelsey Watkins put the Eagles up 39-28 with a jump shot with just less than 15 minutes left to play.
Edgewood College extended their lead and Coenen drilled another three-point basket with 10:48 to go, giving the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 49-32. However, Benedictine wasn't done as they scored 14 of the next 19 points, cutting the deficit to 54-46 with 5:52 remaining. The Eagles got within six at 58-52 with 2:07 left when Katie Hunzinger hit a jump shot in the paint. Walker then hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the 62-54 victory.
Tobin led the Eagles with 17 points while Walker scored 12 point to go along with 11 rebounds for the double-double. The double-double is the first for Walker this season and second of her career. Bylsma and Coenen also cracked double figures, both scoring 10 points to give the Eagles four scorers with 10 or more points since last February against Aurora University. Bylsma was second on the team with nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double. Mariah Hill handed out a game-high seven assists in the win.
