Geneseo Blanks Cortland in OT for 75-63 Victory

GENESEO, N.Y. – Melissa Graham scored six of her game-high 24 points in overtime as Geneseo defeated Cortland, 75-63, in a SUNYAC matchup. The defending SUNYAC champion Knights improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league. Cortland, which played in its third overtime game of the season, is now 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Graham made 8-of-15 field goals and all seven of her free throws. Meghan Prue connected on 4-of-7 three-pointers and finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Shannon McGinnis added 13 points and Bri Dunton recorded five assists, seven rebounds and six steals. Graham and McGinnis grabbed six rebounds each.

Cortland was led by senior Megan Maycumber's 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Seniors Micki Volpini and Molly Byrne scored nine points each. Volpini made all three of her field goal attempts and both of her free throws. Byrne led the Red Dragons with seven assists.

Also for Cortland, junior Katrina Davenport scored eight points, while senior Brittany Cohen and sophomore Megan Touhey tallied seven points apiece. Senior Ally Biordi led the team with nine rebounds, followed by Maycumber and Byrne with six each.

Geneseo outscored Cortland 12-0 in the overtime session. Graham hit a layup with 3:20 left, followed by two Lea Sobieraski free throws with 2:53 left. Prue hit a trey to extend the lead to seven with 2:14 left. McGinnis sank a foul shot with 1:59 on the clock and Graham made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 36 seconds. Cortland shot 0-for-8 overall and 0-for-5 from three-point range in the overtime.

Cortland trailed 46-37 with 13:11 left in regulation. A 17-4 run followed, however, and the Red Dragons led 54-50 with 6:59 left. The streak included two Brittany Rando three-pointers, two Volpini jumpers and a Davenport trey, and was capped by a Byrne four-point play.

Prue responded with a three-pointer at the 6:36 mark to cut the Cortland lead to one, and neither team led by more than three the rest of the half. Touhey's traditional three-point play with 3:10 left tied the game at 60-60. Graham nailed a three-pointer with 2:54 left, but Cohen knotted the game with a three of her own with 2:03 remaining.

Neither team scored again in regulation. After Prue missed a three-pointer, Geneseo forced a Cortland shot-clock violation with 1:14 left. The Knights missed on three shot attempts during its next possession and Cortland got the ball back with 22 seconds left. The Red Dragons, however, were unable to get a shot off as Geneseo's defense was able to knock the ball away on a drive in the final few seconds.

Cortland will travel to Buffalo State Friday at 6 p.m. and Fredonia Saturday at 2 p.m. for league contests.
