OSWEGO, N.Y. - A solid defensive effort by the Oswego State women's basketball team resulted in a 63-53 win over Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon at Laker Hall. The Lakers (5-1 overall, 2-0 SUNYAC) forced the visiting Cardinals to commit 22 turnovers that were converted into 23 points. Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) had a big day on both ends of the floor as she had 20 points to go along with five steals.
Plattsburgh (1-3, 0-2) held a small 4-2 lead in the early stages of the game before Oswego State embarked on an 11-0 run that featured a pair of treys from Lauren Nunziato (So., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) and five points from Stover to put the Lakers ahead 13-4. The Cardinals called an effective timeout following Nunizato's second basket that started a 8-0 run for the visitors to bring them within one point.
Head coach Tracy Bruno called a 30-second timeout of her own to calm the troops, and Oswego State rattled off 16 unanswered points to take a 29-12 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Plattsburgh cut into the deficit before intermission, as it trailed 31-21 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half the Lakers saw their lead swell to 16 points after Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) hit three of her 16 points. The Cardinals cut the lead to 10 on numerous ocassions, but was never able to bring the margin into single digits as Oswego State earned the victory.
Stover and Ryan were the only Lakers to reach double digits. Plattsburgh's Kathleen Payne was held to 15 points, which was well below her season average of 22.7 points due in large part to the defensive effort of Ryan. Brittany Marshall came off the bench to give the Cardinasl 13 points, while Catherine Cassidy hauled down nine rebounds.
Each squad had comparable shooting days as Oswego State went 20-for-60 from the field (36.7 percent) and 6-for-15 from long range (40 percent), while Plattsburgh shot 37.5 percent from the floor (18-for-48) and 41.7 percent from three-point land (5-for-12). The Lakers shot well from the charity stripe by going 13-for-15 for 86.7 percent.
Oswego State will face three conference opponents on the road next week starting with a contest against Brockport on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
