More news about: Alverno

AURORA, Ill. -- Aurora University's Jaime Gooch made a desperation 3-pointer from just inside the half-court line for a 69-68 buzzer beater over visiting Alverno College this afternoon in Northern Athletics Conference action.

The Inferno (2-5, 0-3 NAC) led 66-58 with just under a minute to play, but made only 2-of-10 free throws in the final 40 seconds allowing the host Spartans (2-5, 1-2) to stay in the game. Alverno shot just 26-of-48 (54 percent) from the charity stripe and attempted more than twice the amount the Spartans (11-of-22) did, but also committed a season-high 29 turnovers compared to just 18 by Aurora.

Aurora was able to score on all but one of their final six possessions, including the final possession of the game.

Alverno junior guard Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau) led all scorers with 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting and was also 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) added 13 and was 4-of-8 from the floor, 7-of-8 from the line.

The Spartans were led by Gooch's 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and also had 10 rebounds to lead the hosts.

Jamie Hoernke (Mt. Horeb, Wis.) snagged a game-high 12 rebounds for the Inferno, who won the battle of the boards 48-40.

The Inferno will look to snap their three-game skid as they host Concordia University Wisconsin on Tuesday in Reiman Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
