Howard Payne Hangs On for 68-63 Win Over Lady Choctaws

CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College women's basketball team had a three-game win streak snapped with a 68-63 loss to Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, the Lady Choctaws (3-2, 3-1 ASC) took a 63-61 lead with 1:23 remaining on a three-point play by junior Kristin Newsome.

The Lady Jackets (4-2, 2-2) ended the game on a 7-0 run, sparked by a three-pointer by Brittany Roberson, to clinch the five-point victory.

Junior Caitlin Brown earned her first career start after senior Jamie Lack was injured in the first half against Sul Ross State.  The Douglasville, GA native scored a career-high 15 points on 6-13 shooting in 32 minutes.

Junior Traci Rodgers came off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds, making 3-5 three-pointers.  Junior Elizabeth Brooks also pulled down six boards and led the way with three of the team's 13 steals.

Howard Payne was led by Roberson with 23 points on 8-11 shooting, including making all four of her three-pointers.  Roshonda Gayden paced the Lady Jackets with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Choctaws shot 44% (24-54) from the floor and held HPU to just 38% (23-60).

MC will be back at home on Tuesday night when they host Louisiana College at 5:30 p.m. in the "Golden Dome".
