Centre women open SCAC play with 66-61 win over Millsaps

The first half was tight throughout. It featured six ties and six lead changes with neither team leading by more than four points. The Majors made six of their nine three points shots, but were only four of 18 from inside the three-point arc.

Centre senior guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) missed only one shot in the first half to finish with 12 points on six of seen shooting.

The second half was much like the first. Millsaps' Lovie Love hit a jumper to tie the game for the 11 time with 11:50 left in the game.

Senior center Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) then scored the next five points on a pair of lay-ups and a free throw to give the Colonels a 48-43 lead.

The Majors (3-2, 0-1 SCAC) fought back with an 8-2 run to take a 53-50 lead with just under six minutes to play.

The two teams continued to go back and forth. Tied at 58-58, Prewitt hit a lay-up for a 60-58 lead, but Love answered with a three-pointer to give Millsaps a 61-60 lead with only 1:10 on the clock.

Junior Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) hit a jumper with 48 seconds left and Prewitt nailed four free throws to seal the five-point win.

Centre finished the game shooting 47.3% (26-55) for the game, including 13 of 15 (86.7%) from the free throw line, while the Majors shot 44.7% (21-47) from the field.

Prewitt led all scorers with 25 points, four rebounds and two steals. Benham added 12 points and six rebounds and Huter finished with 11 points and three rebounds.

Love led Millsaps with 19 points on seven of 13 shooting and Shante Morton recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Colonels, now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, will travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play Rhodes Sunday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. CST.
