Devils Get Defensive, Hand 'Fords First Loss, 51-43

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team found its way into the win column on Tuesday night. In the process the Red Devils also handed visiting Haverford College its first loss of the season.  The Red Devils pull even in Centennial Conference play at 1-1, improving to 1-5 overall while Haverford slips to 4-1 and 1-1 in the CC.

 

The 'Fords struck first and held the lead until almost the eight minute mark of the first half. They stretched the margin to 13-6 before the Devils went on a 9-1 run to take their first lead of the night, 15-14, at the 8:26 mark.

 

The teams played even for the final eight minutes. Junior Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) drained a jumper to put Dickinson up, 23-21, at halftime.

 

Haverford pulled even twice, early in the second half, but the Devils would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. The Devils broke a 25-25 tie, scoring nine straight points to lead, 34-25, with 14:09 remaining in regulation.

 

Haverford cut the lead to three on two more occasions. A three-pointer cut the deficit to 37-34 with 8:33 to play. They trailed just 46-43 with 1:12 remaining, but the Devils would hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

 

Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./ Red Lion) led the way with nine points and a pair of steals. Gillian Ferko (Palmerton, Pa./Marian Catholic) and Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) each scored eight points. Ferko controlled a game-high 10 rebounds while Finnerty pulled down seven rebounds, hitting 6-of-8 free throws on the night.

 

Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) added eight points as well, grabbing six rebounds and hitting all four free throw attempts.

 

Mekic and first-year Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) combined for 12 points and nine rebounds and were both perfect from the line as the Devils hit 23-of-29 from the stripe.

 

Dickinson (1-5, 1-1) is home again on Thursday, hosting McDaniel College at 7:00 pm. The Red Devils host Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 2:00 pm. That will be the Devils' Play4Kay Game to raise awareness for the fight to find a cure for breast cancer. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink and join the Devils in this worthwhile cause.
