Cortland Holds Off Plattsburgh Rally for 65-55 Victory

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Brittany Cohen scored 19 points and sophomore Megan Touhey added 12 points as Cortland defeated Plattsburgh, 65-55, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. Cortland is now 5-1 overall and Plattsburgh is 1-2.

Cohen also grabbed five rebounds and finished with a team-high four assists. Senior Ally Biordi chipped in with 11 points, all in the first half, and senior Megan Maycumber led the Red Dragons with eight rebounds.

Kathleen Payne and Chrystal Pope led Plattsburgh with 16 points each. Pope, who played 18 minutes off the bench, hit 7-of-13 shots from the floor. Yazmin Lewis pulled down nine rebounds, Payne had six rebounds and Catherine Cassidy finished with six assists and six rebounds.

Plattsburgh rallied from 16 points down early in the second half and trailed by only four, 57-53, with 4:37 left after a Pope three-pointer. Cohen's layup with 3:53 left put the Red Dragons up by six and she hit two foul shots with 3:14 remaining to extend the lead to eight. The margin was at least six from that point. Cohen scored Cortland's final 10 points of the game.

Cortland went on a 9-2 run in the first half to take a 25-13 lead with 6:22 remaining before intermission. The Red Dragons led 34-21 at halftime and extended the margin to 16 points on three Molly Byrne foul shots 12 seconds into the second half.

Down 39-23 less than a minute into the half, Plattsburgh scored 21 of the game's next 30 points and trailed 48-44 with 12:08 left. The Cardinals hung tough from that point until Cortland's final surge.

Cortland shot 35 percent from the floor and made 17-of-23 free throws. Plattsburgh hit 33 percent of its shots but only scored seven points (in eight attempts) from the foul line.

Cortland will host Potsdam in SUNYAC action Saturday at 2 p.m.
