(Towson, Md.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to tie the game. Host Goucher College held off the Red Devils, however, 60-52.
Goucher took an early 10-4 lead before the Devils pulled back within two at 12-10, midway through the half. The Gophers stretched the margin to 20-10 just two minutes later.
Trailing 24-13, the Devils closed the gap with an 8-1 run of their own to make the score, 25-21, at the 1:37 mark. Goucher scored the final two baskets of the half to lead, 29-21, at the break.
The Devils opened the second half with an 11-4 run to pull with one, 33-32, with 13:35 remaining. The Devils pulled even at 35-35. The Gophers answered with a 21-9 run and led 56-44 with 3:59 remaining in regulation.
The Devils weren't done yet, rallying to cut the deficit to four, at 56-52, with 31 seconds to play. Elizabeth Von Ende sank a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to give the Gophers a 58-52 lead. Von Ende made a steal and was fouled again, hitting one-of-two attempts. She grabbed a rebound with two seconds remaining, going 1-for-2 again for the final of 60-52.
Senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) scored 11 points, controlled five rebounds and dished out three assists while junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) added 11 points and four rebounds to lead the Red Devils.
Junior Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) and first-year Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) each tallied eight points and five rebounds on the night. Finnerty added five assists and two steals. Junior Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) recorded five assists and four steals to go with five points.
The Red Devils slip to 0-2 on the season. They return home to face the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the opening round of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night at 8:00 pm.
