Looking to bounce back after a lopsided setback against Twin Ports rival UMD, the University of Wisconsin-Superior women's basketball squad was able to come up with a disproportionate victory of its own against visiting Northwestern College by a 75-56 tally.

With the win, the Yellowjackets rise above the .500 mark with a record of 3-2 while the Eagles fall to 1-3 in the early going of the 2011-12 campaign.

The Yellowjackets never trailed in the tilt, and opened the scoring with a Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) jumper at the 19:07 mark of the first period. The Eagles responded with a layup on their next possession to tie the game, but that was as close to leading as they would come.

Defensive intensity was the story of the first half for the Yellowjackets, who flummoxed the Eagles for the majority of the stanza. UWS forced 18 turnovers in the first half and held the Eagles scoreless from the field over a span of 7:09 while witnessing their lead bulge to 11 before the Eagles finally canned a three-pointer for their second field goal of the game at the 11:40 mark.

As the Eagles blundered about, the Yellowjackets were able to score seemingly at will, earning their biggest lead of the half when Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) put home a layup for a 16-point edge. UWS limited the Eagles to a mark of just 23.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including just 10 field goals.

The Yellowjackets continued their onslaught to begin the deciding frame, going on an 11-0 run to take 60-37 lead, effectively sealing the victory. The lead never dipped below 15 points for the home squad who cruised to an easy victory.

UWS dominated most facets of the game, including an astonishing 55-29 rebounding edge. The Yellowjackets did a commendable job cleaning up the offensive glass, snaring 26 offensive boards during the rout.

All told, the Yellowjackets shot 40.9 percent from the field and forced a total of 27 turnovers. The home squad also held the Eagles to a shooting percentage of .357.

The Yellowjackets were paced by  Hart who scored 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting. The senior also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the first double-double of her final season in a UWS uniform.

Chanel Madson led the way for the Eagles with 14 points. Two other players chipped in 10 for Northwestern.

UWS will embark on a journey to Stevens Point on Saturday (Dec. 3) to begin the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of its schedule. Tip-off between the Yellowjackets and the Pointers is scheduled for 3 p.m.
