Concordia's inside game too much for Macalester

Macalester hosted Concordia-Moorhead to begin the 22-game MIAC schedule and played well against the traditional league stronghold, but the Cobbers were too tough inside, out-scoring the Scots 40-14 in points in the paint and going on to gain a 63-51 decision over Mac at the Leonard Center.

The evening got off to a good start for the Scots, who led 20-15 before Concordia staged a 15-0 rally to go on top 30-20. The Cobbers led 32-23 at halftime. Macalester was within three points at 38-35 five minutes into the second half before Concordia tallied 10 straight points to go up 48-35 midway through the period. Macalester got to within six points with 4:42 to play but the visitors pulled away to win by 12.

Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) nailed four of her eight three-point shots and finished with 20 points to lead Macalester, now 2-2 on the season. As a team, however, the Scots shot 28% from the floor, compared to 44% for Concordia.

Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) scored 11 points and Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) had 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Cobbers limited Macalester to three second-chance points to overcome a 15-5 Scot advantage in points off turnovers. Concordia's 6-4 center Alexandra Lippert had all five of her blocked shots in the first half and finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Emily Thesing added 11 points and five assists. Concordia improves to 3-1 on the year.

The Scots head back to the court Saturday (Dec. 3) when they host Bethel at 1 p.m.
