The Bethany College women's basketball team opened PAC play Wednesday night with a 79-67 victory at Grove City.
The Bison's second straight win improves their record to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while GCC falls to 1-4 and 0-1.
The game opened with senior Anne Wilson hitting a three to complete a 9-2 run. The Wolverines answered with 10 straight points to go in front and the rest of the half was a back-and-forth affair. Grove City led by four at 25-21 with six minutes to play in the opening half, but BC closed the period with a flourish.
Three straight hoops by senior Katelynn Hackathorn and a trey at the buzzer by senior Audra Droginske completed a 9-1 spurt and sent Bethany into the locker room with a 36-27 lead.
The second half began the same way the first ended, with a Bethany surge. Sophomore guard Skylar Williams canned back-to-back threes to swell the BC cushion to 46-29. The Wolverines spent the rest of the game trying to get back within striking distance and used a string of five straight points to cut the Green and White lead to 64-57 with five minutes to play.
The home team would get no closer however, as Bethany scored four straight to push the lead back to double digits. The Bison then clinched the victory at the foul line, going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in the last minute to secure their sixth win on Grove City's home floor in the last seven trips.
Hackathron led all scorers in the game with 18 points and recorded a double-double by pulling down 11 rebounds. Wilson fired in 14 and chipped in six assists and five boards, while junior Kayla Taormina notched 11 markers.
The Wolverines were led by Leah Gibson with 18 points and Megan Gebrosky with 13.
Bethany will try to make it a 2-0 start to conference play Saturday when its hosts Geneva in a 2 p.m. tip-off at Hummel Field House.
