GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy picked up a 69-59 win over visiting Rosemont in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams Monday night.
Three players finished in double figures for the Griffins (2-2, 1-0 CSAC) led by sophomore Jordan Dominic with 11 off the bench. Sophomores Cara McArdle and Taylour Alston each had 10 as GM gradually pulled away in the second half.
Ashley Montecchio had game highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Ravens (2-2, 0-1 CSAC), who also got 14 points from Liz Coyne.
Tied at 19-19 with 7:20 in the first, Gwynedd used a 17-4 spurt to go up by 15 with just over a minute in the stanza. The Ravens scored the last five points of the half to cut the GM lead to 38-28 at the break.
Rosemont hung around in the second as the Griffins looked to stretch their advantage. McArdle's hoop and harm underneath helped GM start the process, turning a nine-point edge into a 58-46 lead with 7:21 remaining.
Coyne also grabbed nine boards for Rosemont, who outrebounded Gwynedd, 45-43. Freshman Shea Wassel led GM with seven. Alston chipped in six caroms and three blocks.
The Griffins return to action on Wednesday when they take on the defending champion Knights of Neumann in Aston in a rematch of last season's playoff ending defeat. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
