STANDISH, Maine   – Senior forward Allie Parent (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) scored a team-high 16 points as the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Monks stunned the University of Southern Maine Huskies 65-59 in overtime Sunday evening in Standish, Maine

The win over Southern Maine is the first in 14 tries for the Monks and improves their record to 3-1.  The win also gives the Monks the Costello Cup for just the third time in the 21-game history of the cup.  The Costello Cup is presented annually to the winner of the game between the two schools.  The Monks trail the cup series to Southern Maine 18-3.  The loss halts a three-game win streak for Southern Maine and drops its record to 3-2.

Parent was one of three Monks in double-figures scoring, adding five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.  Senior guard Meghan McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and senior center Ashley Geel (St. George, Maine/Georges Valley) each added 10 points.

Senior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) led all scorers with 21 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.  Junior forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.  Senior guard Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine/Deering) added 16 points on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Monks jumped out to a 28-23 lead at the break taking advantage of an ice-cold shooting performance from the Huskies.  Southern Maine shot just 30.8 percent (8-for-26) from the field in the opening stanza and did further harm committing nine turnovers.  Geel scored all 10 of her points in the first half to help the Monks.

In the second half, the Monks retained their lead over Southern Maine despite the Huskies pulling to within one possession five times.  Southern Maine took its first lead since the opening tip with 2:04 remaining on a lay-up from Cochran, but the Monks' Parent equaled the score up at 52-52 making one of two free throws moments later.

With just 22 seconds remaining sophomore guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) looked as though she lifted the Huskies to the come-back victory with a layup, but Parent again delivered for the Monks making a lay-up as the buzzer sounded to force overtime.

In the overtime period the Monks outscored Southern Maine 11-5.  Five different players scored in the overtime period for the Monks, led by four points from sophomore guard Mackenzie Dufour (Augusta, Maine/Cony).

Southern Maine hosts nationally-ranked Bowdoin College on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).  St. Joseph's College hosts Thomas College on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.).
