The Maryville College women's basketball team dropped their opening game of the 2011 Julie Costello Memorial Classic presented by Barleycorn's by the score of 60-54 to Shawnee State on Saturday afternoon in Crestview Hills, Kentucky on the campus of Thomas More College.
The strong NAIA foe used a pair of free-throws by Alex Pohl, who finished with a game-high 24 points, in the closing seconds to pull away from the Scots who had moved to within one three-pointer with less than two minutes remaining.
Shawnee State (6-1) used Pohl's double-double, including a game-high 10 rebounds, along with Alannah Sheets' and Abby Ballman's double digit scoring efforts with 13 and 10 respectively.
Maryville (1-2) used a balanced scoring attack with six players contributing. Kiera Payne, C.J. Dake, and Lauren Burnett each poured in nine points. Payne and Dake combined for 10 boards. Janell Menard added eight points while Lailah Farmer contributed seven points and four assists.
Shawnee State out-rebounded Maryville 39-27 and shot 52% from the floor in the second half to help erase a 26-23 MC halftime lead. The Scots finished 32% from the floor for the game while hitting only 8-of-21 three-point attempts.
The Scots will conclude the weekend tournament in Kentucky with a challenge against Capital, Ohio at 2:00 p.m.
