MILWAUKEE -- The visiting Lakeland College Muskies shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the 3-point arc and defeated the Alverno College Inferno 70-53 in both teams' Northern Athletics Conference opener this afternoon in Reiman Gymnasium.
The Muskies (2-1, 1-0 NAC) shot 8-of-12 from downtown in the opening half for the 37-31 halftime lead, while the Inferno (2-3, 0-1) shot just 34 percent from the floor in the first half and committed 10 turnovers.
Alverno's last lead of the game was with 6:25 in the first half on an Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) layup that made the score 22-21, but an 8-0 run by the Muskies over the next 2 minutes was the final swing of the game.
Lakeland's Jessica Genke (Kiel, Wis.) led all scores with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting as Hannah Galstad (Holmen, Wis.) led the Inferno with 15 on 6-of-12.
Kontowski added 13 for the Inferno and Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau) chipped in eight points and tied Genke with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Inferno held a slight advantage on the boards, 41-40, but committed 19 turnovers to Lakeland's 14 and shot just 31 percent from the floor including 23 percent from the 3-point arc.
Alverno continues conference play with a pair of road games next week at Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday and at Aurora University on Saturday.
