Moravian Earns 1st win of 2011-12 Season with a 66-50 Victory at DeSales

The Moravian College women's basketball team would defeat DeSales University, 66-50 in non-conference action Tuesday evening. Senior forward Alexandra Blair led the way for the Greyhounds with recording a double-double off of 15 points and 14 rebounds. She also had seven blocks, four assists and two steals.

Moravian would get the top to start the game as junior guard Amanda Kreuder would race for the layup to give the Hounds a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs would answer and take an early 4-2 lead. The Greyhounds would come back with a basket from Blair. Blair would then block a shot from sophomore guard Faith Gilbert, and then sophomore guard Katie O'Rourke would steal the ball and run up for a layup to give Moravian a 6-4 lead just two and half minutes in.
Both teams would exchange buckets with the Greyhounds taking a 17-14 advantage.

Sophomore guard Alyssa Hann would steal the ball and make a quick pass to sophomore forward Laura Jordan, who made a jumper from the foul line as Moravian went up 19-14 with 12 minutes to go in the first half. Soon after Hann would steal the pass from sophomore guard Alexiah Grant and make her layup while being fouled on the play. She would convert on her free throw attempt to give Moravian a 22-15 lead. Blair would make back-to-back baskets to give the Greyhounds a 26-15 lead with nine minutes to go in the half.

DeSales would fight back and come within one point of the lead after Gilbert hit a rainbow three to make the score 27-26, Moravian, with 6:30 remaining in the half. The Greyhounds would answer with a basket from Jordan, but freshman forward Alex Suk for the Bulldogs would make the basket and draw the foul. Suk would convert on the free throw to tie the game 29 with five and half minutes remaining. After two free throws made from Kreuder, Hann would steal the ball, but miss the layup and get her own rebound. The Hounds would regroup, and Jordan would nail the jumper as Moravian would go up 33-29. Soon after, Blair would come up big on the defensive end with two blocks in a row to keep the Greyhounds lead at 35-31. Moravian would take a 36-32 lead into the half.

Both teams would continue to trade buckets as the game would be tied at 40 just three minutes into the second half. After that, Blair and Kreuder would ignite the Greyhound offense with two layups for easy buckets as Moravian went up 44-40. The Greyhounds would keep up their momentum as they went on a 20-6 run while reaching a 14 point lead at 60-46 with 7:20 remaining in the second half. Key buckets were made by freshman forward Alexis Wright, Blair, O'Rourke, sophomore guard Laura Casey, Jordan, Kreuder and sophomore guard Dainielle Brogan during that stretch.

O'Rourke would put the Greyhounds back up by 13 with a jumper from the left as Moravian would go up 62-49 with 3:34 left in the contest. DeSales would try and fight back into this one, but come up short, falling 66-50.

O'Rourke scored 10 points and had seven rebounds, three steals and three assists on the night. Murray tallied five assists to go with two steals and two points while Hann had four steals. Kreuder and Jordan both had nine points while Wright scored eight points. Brogan totaled seven points while Casey had five rebounds and three points.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was sophomore guard Sondrive Glovas with 11 points and four steals. Suk brought down seven rebounds while scoring ten points. Junior forward Colleen Gavin had nine rebounds and ten points.

Moravian shot 44.3 percent from the field while DeSales shot 25 percent from the field.

The Greyhounds return to action Saturday, December 3rd when they travel to the University of Scranton to open up Landmark Conference play. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
