COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Oswego State women's basketball team used a 14-0 run midway through the first half to create an insurmountable lead for SUNY Cobleskill in a 72-45 Laker victory on Tuesday night. Senior Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) scored a game-high 19 points for Oswego State (3-1 overall), while Jenna Rossi (Phoenix, N.Y.) added 15 points off the bench.
Paula Egelston (So., Fultonville, N.Y.) triggered the pivotal run with a jumper followed by five points from Ryan, four free throws from Rossi and a trey from Kassie Kleine (So., Cazenovia, N.Y.) to give the Lakers a 22-5 lead with 9:31 remaining in the first half.
The Fighting Tigers (1-3 overall) pulled to within 11 points one minute before the end of the half, but Rossi made three free throws to give Oswego State a 35-21 advantage at intermission.
SUNY Cobleskill cut the deficit to seven points, 45-38, on a jump shot by Victoria Carter with 11:11 on the scoreboard. However, the Lakers put the game out of reach by embarking on a 16-2 stretch following an old-fashioned three-point play by Alyssa Georgiade (Jr., Clay, N.Y.) to put Oswego State ahead, 61-40. The Lakers then cruised to the win.
Oswego State was aggressive offensively, which resulted in the team shooting 29-of-39 (74.4 percent) from the charity stripe. The Laker defense forced the Fighting Tigers to shoot 22.4 percent from the floor on 15-for-67 shooting, but also gave up 23 offensive boards.
SUNY Cobleskill had two players reach double figures as Chelcy Moore chipped in 11 points and Carter added 10.
Oswego State will have Thanksgiving weekend off before opening SUNYAC play against Potsdam on Friday, December 2 at Laker Hall at 6 p.m.
