CNU Improves to to 3-0 With Win on the Road at Salisbury, 66-55

SALISBURY, Md. -- Four different players scored in double figures for the Captains as they improved to 3-0 this season with a 66-55 victory on the road vs. Salisbury University (1-2). Sophomore Tia Perry posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and senior Jerlisa Bowser scored a game-high 16 points as CNU came from behind to win in the second half.

CNU trailed at the half for the first time this season, but the Captains defense had an impressive showing after the break, with six blocks and five steals whlie forcing nine of the Sea Gulls 12 turnovers in the last twenty minutes. CNU held Salisbury to just 22 second-half points on seven made field goals.

The entire first half was close, with eight ties and three lead changes between the two teams. CNU opened up an early 12-5 lead as Bowser scored 10 of the first 12 points. Salisbury answered with a 9-0 run to take a 14-12 lead and neither team led by more than four points the rest of hte half.

Bowser's 10 points led the way for the Captains in the first half, while Perry grabbed a team-high nine rebounds by halftime. CNU shot 37.9% (11-29) in the first half, while Salisbury was hitting at a 46.7% (14-30) clip.

CNU came out of the locker room and tied the game on a free-throw by Nicole Mitchell with 14:52 remaining at 39-39. The Captains took the lead for good two possessions later when Perry hit a jumper in the paint, stole the inbounds pass and knocked down another layup to take a 45-41 lead.

Bowser knocked down a three-pointer with 10:30 remaining to give CNU a game-high eight-point lead, 50-42. Salisbury would pull back within three on a pair of free-throws by KC Curran, 52-49, and again two minutes later on a pair by Katie McGahagan, 54-51, but would get no closer as CNU closed out the game on a 12-4 run to take the 11-point win, 66-55.

CNU held Salisbury to just 7-of-32 shooting in the second half, for a 21.9% shooting and the Captains knocked down 44.8% of their shots on 13-of-29 shooting.

Four Captains finished in double figures led by Bowser's 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She added five rebounds while hitting four three's for CNU. Mitchell poured in 14 points with five boards and four assists, while senior Kimmy Hopkins scored 12 points while grabbing six rebounds. Perry rounded out the double-figure scorers with her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Christopher Newport returns to action following Thanksgiving with their home opener this Saturday, November 26 at 3:00 pm. The Captains will take on Virginia Wesleyan (2-0) in the opener. Live stats will be available at tip.
