OSWEGO, N.Y. - Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) and Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) scored 20 and 15 points, respectively, to help the Oswego State women's basketball team earn a 65-59 come-from-behind victory over Mount St. Vincent to successfully defend its' Max Ziel Tournament title. The Lakers erased a 14-point deficit to improve to 2-1 overall, while the Dolphins fell to 1-2 on the young season.
Ryan was named tournament MVP, while Stover was also named to the all-tournament squad. Mount St. Vincent's Sarah Kluth was joined on the all-tournament team by D'Youville's Kaitlyn Roland and Wells' Jessilynn Artaho-Aki.
After both squads traded baskets on their respective opening possessions, the Dolphin defense helped fuel a 14-0 Mount St. Vincent run as it forced Oswego State to commit eight turnovers during the stretch. The run was capped off by a trey by Tanisha Montague following her steal with 13:35 on the scoreboard.
Lauren Nunziato (So., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) cut the deficit to seven points after a layup to make the score 22-15 with seven minutes to play in the half. However, the Dolphins pushed the lead back to 14 points, 37-23, at the break after Oswego State recorded 18 turnovers.
Mount St. Vincent built its largest margin of the game less than two minutes into the second half after Sarah Kluth scored two of her 12 points on a layup. However, a three-pointer from Ryan's hand on the ensuing possession jumpstarted a 19-6 Laker run to tie the game at 47 with 7:15 on the clock.
Oswego State later took its first lead of the game since 47 seconds into the game at 54-53 when Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer with four minutes to play. The shot triggered a small 8-2 run to give the Lakers a 62-55 minutes later to seal the win.
Ryan added seven rebounds and four assists to her game-high 20 points, while Kari Kipper (Jr., Loudonville, N.Y.) turned in a well-rounded performance with eight points, six rebounds, and three assists. Mount St. Vincent was paced by Andree DeLeon's 13 points.
Neither team took care of the basketball well as Oswego State finished with 26 turnovers and the Dolphins recorded 21, 12 of which came in the second half.
The Lakers will travel to SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday to face the Fighting Tigers at 6 p.m.
